Current neuroscience literature supports lifestyle changes to address mental health, pain and cognition (attention, memory, executive function). Essential components involve effective sleep, physical fitness, proper nutrition, life-activity balance, behaviour activation and engagement, relaxation and emotion regulation strategies and pacing, and appropriate socialization.
The Balanced Brain and Fitness Group aims to support clients in making lifestyle changes to improve mental health and sleep quality, manage pain, improve cognitive function and develop strong stress management skills. Lifestyle interventions (sleep, nutrition, physical activity) in combination with cognitive behavioural therapy approaches are gaining significant support for their ability to promote rehabilitation for mental health, chronic pain, and brain injury symptoms. Please refer to supporting references and resources here.
This collaboration between Renew Neurotherapy and Fleming Fitness aims to meet the above goal with an innovative approach; combining a CBT-based behavioural activation approach with current neuroscience and a fitness program to promote engagement and follow-through.
The group therapy portion of the program is run in 6, 1.5-hour-long sessions:
The team at Fleming Fitness addresses the fitness component of the program in order to support chronic pain, mental health and cognition management. Sessions supervised by a kinesiologist. The team at Fleming Fitness has extensive experience working with serious injuries, chronic pain and cognitive and mental health symptoms. Sessions are one-on-one (online or in-person at the Kanata location) in order to customize the program to the presenting needs of the participating client.
