7 Therapist-Approved Tips for Winter Wellness

As the days get colder and shorter, it’s easy to feel a little off-balance during the winter months. At Renew Neurotherapy, our therapists understand how challenging this season can be, so we’ve put together practical, therapist-approved tips to help you stay healthy and happy throughout winter. From building better habits to embracing the outdoors, these expert strategies can make a big difference in your well-being. Let’s dive in!

1. Plan Activities to Anticipate
By Laura Friberg
“So much of our pleasure comes from anticipation. Make sure you plan activities, big or small, that you’ll look forward to. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate trip south. Looking forward to a cozy evening with a cherished friend, for example, can work wonders for our winter wellbeing.”

Taking the time to plan enjoyable activities can give you something to look forward to and boost your mood, even on the darkest days of winter.

2. Stick to a Morning Routine
By Chelsea Cloutier
“My quick winter tip is sticking to a morning routine which includes things like making my bed, eating breakfast, and avoiding social media/devices first thing in the morning. This ensures I have a good start to the day through a low stim activity, such as reading or knitting, rather than scrolling for too long and rushing to work!”

A consistent morning routine can set the tone for your day, helping you feel grounded and focused from the start.

3. Revisit Childhood Snow Day Activities
By Susan Kennedy
“Remember what you used to do on snow days, and incorporate that activity during these dark winter weeks!”

Channeling your inner child by building a snowman or sledding can bring back joyful memories and brighten your mood.

4. Practice Better Breathing
By Ashley Hemmings
“My quick tip is said perfectly in this quote from the book ‘Breath’ by James Nestor:
‘If I had to limit my advice on healthier living to just one tip, it would be simply to learn how to breathe better.’ – Andrew Weil, M.D.
We can practice breathing more optimally with the support of an application/audio guide, read up on various breathing techniques and then practice them independently, or even work on them in therapy sessions with professional support. Get into a regular routine with practicing breath work, ensure you are breathing in through your nose, and breathing slowly and deeply. Over time, watch the positive changes this will bring to your life.”

Breath work is a powerful tool to reduce stress and promote relaxation, especially during the colder months when we’re often cooped up indoors.

5. Plan Outdoor Weekend Activities
By Alesha Allan
“During the winter months, I plan one outdoor activity each weekend (e.g., skating, sledding, skiing) to ensure that I am getting out of the house and getting much-needed sunlight and physical activity.”

Even just a few hours outside can improve your mood and energy levels while helping you stay physically active.

6. Prioritize Sleep with Three Key Habits
By Emily Cartwright
“One way I like to focus on my health in the winter is prioritizing my sleep to help with my energy levels throughout darker winter days.
3 things that are hugely important to our sleep are:

  1. Movement in the day
  2. Sunlight
  3. Drinking enough water
In the winter, my goal is to make sure I am achieving at least 2/3 of these per day.
If it is a cloudy day without much sun, I prioritize drinking enough and getting some movement.
If it is a day where I may not have the opportunity for a lot of movement, I try to work or have lunch near a window letting in any sunshine we may get during the day.”

Sleep is the foundation of health, and following Emily’s tips can help ensure your winter days feel more energized.

7. Make Time for Socialization
By Susan Mills
“In order to stay well during the winter months, I find it important to get out there and socialize even though my body wants to hibernate. We are social beings, and without it, my mood becomes low very quickly. Even though it’s cold out, get out there and socialize!”

Staying connected with others is essential for your mental health. Bundle up, brave the cold, and spend time with loved ones.
