1. What is neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that helps the brain learn from its own activity. During a session, small sensors on the scalp record the brain’s electrical activity. A computer turns that information into real-time feedback, such as changes in a video, image, or sound. Over repeated sessions, this gives the brain opportunities to practise different patterns of activity and regulation. There are several types of neurofeedback, and they do not all work in exactly the same way. At Renew, we choose the approach based on the person’s symptoms, needs, and treatment goals.
2. How is neurofeedback different from other types of biofeedback?
Biofeedback uses information from the body to help support awareness and regulation. Depending on the type, it might track breathing, heart rate, muscle tension, skin temperature, or perspiration. Neurofeedback works on the same basic idea, but the information comes from EEG brain activity instead. In both cases, real-time feedback gives the nervous system an opportunity to learn from what it is doing.
3. What does the research say about neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback has been studied for decades, with research looking at things like attention and ADHD, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, sleep, brain injury, and self-regulation. The strength of the evidence varies depending on the condition, the type of neurofeedback, and the outcomes being studied. One of the tricky parts in making sense of the research is that “neurofeedback” isn’t just one single treatment. Different studies use different types of neurofeedback, train different EEG patterns, follow different protocols, and measure different outcomes. So in many cases, they’re not actually studying the exact same thing. This means the most useful question is usually not simply, “Does neurofeedback work?” but rather, “What does the research tell us about this type of neurofeedback for this particular concern or goal?” At Renew, we focus on the research that best matches the type of neurofeedback we’re using and the goals we’re working toward. We also keep an eye on whether training is actually leading to real, noticeable changes in symptoms, regulation, and day-to-day life.
4. Is neurofeedback safe? Are there possible side effects?
Neurofeedback is non-invasive and is generally considered low risk when it is provided and monitored appropriately. Some people notice temporary effects such as fatigue, headache, irritability, dizziness, changes in sleep, or feeling mentally foggy. Many people do not experience these effects at all. If something feels uncomfortable or noticeably different after a session, let your therapist know. Neurofeedback can be adjusted, and part of good treatment is paying attention to how each person responds.
5. What does it mean to be Board Certified in Neurofeedback?
Board Certified in Neurofeedback (BCN) is a professional credential awarded by the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA). To earn the credential, providers complete specific education in neurofeedback and brain function, hands-on training and mentoring, and a certification exam. They also complete ongoing education to maintain their certification. Board certification is voluntary, but it provides an additional standard of training beyond simply learning how to operate neurofeedback equipment. At Renew, all clinicians who lead our neurofeedback programs are Board Certified in Neurofeedback. Other members of our neurofeedback team are completing the BCIA training and certification process and work under the guidance of our board-certified leads.
6. Do the sensors send electricity into my brain?
No. The sensors only record electrical activity from the scalp. They do not send electricity, shocks, or stimulation into the brain. They work much like other sensors used to measure activity in the body. They are listening, not sending anything in. If you have sensitive skin or concerns about the products used to attach the sensors, just let us know before your session.
7. How does the brain actually “learn” during a neurofeedback session?
Neurofeedback gives the brain information about what it is doing in real time. As your brain activity changes, something in the feedback changes too; perhaps the picture becomes clearer, a movie plays more smoothly, or a sound changes. Over and over, the brain gets a chance to respond to that information. Think of it as practice. Just as we learn other skills through experience and repetition, neurofeedback gives the brain repeated opportunities to practise different patterns of regulation. Not every type of neurofeedback uses the same learning process, and researchers are still studying exactly how different approaches produce change.
8. What role does neuroplasticity play in neurofeedback?
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s natural ability to change and adapt through experience. Neurofeedback takes advantage of this ability by creating repeated opportunities for learning. With practice, the brain may become more flexible in how it responds to stress, stimulation, attention demands, and other challenges. That does not mean neurofeedback permanently “rewires” the brain after a few sessions. Like other forms of learning, change develops through repetition and can become more established over time.
9. Do I have to consciously control my brain during neurofeedback?
Usually, no. This is one of the hardest parts of neurofeedback to understand at first. You are not expected to think, “Now I need to make more of this brainwave,” or consciously figure out how to change your EEG. The feedback gives your brain information in real time, and learning develops through repeated experience. Much of neurofeedback is based on a learning process called operant conditioning. During sessions, the training software is watching for specific changes in brain activity. When those changes occur, the brain receives positive feedback. For example, a movie may become brighter, clearer, or play more smoothly. With repetition, the brain begins to learn which patterns lead to that positive feedback, even though you may not consciously know what you did differently. The feedback provides information about the change, and your brain gets repeated opportunities to practise. It is a little like learning balance on a bicycle. You do not consciously calculate every tiny movement your body makes. You wobble, adjust, get feedback from what happens, and gradually your nervous system learns what works.
10. Could neurofeedback be a good fit for me?
Possibly. People explore neurofeedback for many different reasons, including attention, anxiety, sleep, trauma-related symptoms, concussion recovery, regulation, and performance goals. Whether it is a good fit depends on what you are hoping to change, your health history, your symptoms, and the research related to your concerns. The first step is an assessment. This helps us decide whether neurofeedback makes sense as part of your care, or whether another approach may be more useful.
11. What symptoms and conditions might neurofeedback be used for?
People explore neurofeedback for a range of concerns. At Renew, we may consider it as part of treatment for:
- Attention, focus, and executive functioning, including ADHD
- Anxiety, stress, and emotional regulation
- Sleep difficulties
- PTSD and trauma-related symptoms
- Persistent symptoms following concussion or brain injury
Some types of neurofeedback also focus more broadly on regulation. This can be helpful when someone feels constantly on edge, overwhelmed, shut down, overstimulated, or simply has a hard time settling.
An assessment helps us understand what is getting in the way and whether neurofeedback might be a useful part of the treatment plan.
12. How can neurofeedback support attention and ADHD?
Attention difficulties are not always as simple as “I can’t focus.” Some people have trouble getting started, staying with a task, filtering distractions, shifting attention, slowing down before acting, or managing the mental overload that builds up during the day. Neurofeedback may be used to help the brain practise patterns associated with attention and regulation. Depending on the person and the type of training, the goal might be better sustained attention, easier shifting between tasks, improved impulse control, or greater ability to recover from overstimulation. We look for changes that matter outside the neurofeedback session, such as getting through school or work tasks more easily, needing fewer reminders, or feeling less mentally overwhelmed. Neurofeedback can also be used alongside ADHD medication. Any medication changes should be discussed with the prescribing healthcare provider.
13. Can neurofeedback help with anxiety and panic attacks?
Anxiety is not just something we experience in our thoughts. It can also involve a nervous system that has difficulty settling after stress. Some people with anxiety feel constantly on edge, have strong physical stress responses, struggle with sleep, or find that their mind and body stay activated long after a stressful event has passed. Neurofeedback approaches this in different ways. Depending on the type of training, the goal may be to work with brain activity related to arousal or to support broader brain and body regulation. We look for practical changes, such as feeling calmer, recovering from stress more easily, sleeping better, or being better able to participate in everyday life.
14. Can neurofeedback help with PTSD and trauma recovery?
Trauma can leave the nervous system struggling to find the right level of regulation. Someone may feel constantly alert and unable to settle, or move between feeling overwhelmed, reactive, disconnected, or shut down. Sleep, concentration, emotional regulation, and recovery after triggers can all be affected. Neurofeedback may be used to help the brain and nervous system practise more flexible patterns of regulation. Different approaches do this in different ways depending on the person and their symptoms. Importantly, neurofeedback itself does not require you to talk about or relive traumatic experiences. We look for practical changes such as sleeping better, recovering from triggers more easily, feeling more settled, and being better able to participate in relationships and everyday life.
15. Can I do neurofeedback if I am taking medication?
Usually, yes. Many people participate in neurofeedback while also taking medication. We ask about medications because they can affect sleep, alertness, symptoms, and EEG activity. It is also helpful for us to know if a medication or dosage changes while you are doing neurofeedback so that we can better understand changes in how you are feeling. Neurofeedback should not be used as a reason to stop or reduce prescribed medication on your own. Any medication changes should be made with the healthcare provider who prescribed it.
16. Can neurofeedback help with persistent symptoms after a concussion or mild brain injury?
After a concussion, some people continue to struggle with headaches, fatigue, poor sleep, concentration problems, irritability, or sensitivity to light and noise. Neurofeedback may be used to support regulation when the brain and nervous system seem to have difficulty settling or adapting after injury. Depending on the person, training may focus on attention, arousal, or broader brain-body regulation. At Renew, we look for practical changes such as better sleep, improved concentration, greater tolerance for activity, and easier recovery after physical or mental exertion. Neurofeedback may be one part of a broader concussion rehabilitation plan. It does not replace medical assessment or other appropriate rehabilitation.
17. Can children and teenagers participate in neurofeedback?
Yes. Children and teenagers can participate in neurofeedback when it is a good fit for their needs, developmental level, and treatment goals. They do not need to consciously control their brain activity or understand everything happening during the session. The learning can take place while they watch a video, listen to sounds, or take part in another suitable activity. Parents and caregivers are often involved in setting goals and monitoring progress. We might look for changes in areas such as sleep, attention, emotional regulation, behaviour, recovery after stress, or participation at home and school. We also make sure the young person understands what to expect and feels comfortable with the sensors and the training process.
18. Can neurofeedback help with sleep?
Sleep problems can show up in different ways. Some people have trouble settling at night, wake frequently, sleep lightly, or feel tired but still too alert to fall asleep easily. Neurofeedback may be used to support the regulation systems involved in arousal and sleep. Depending on the person, the goal might be falling asleep more easily, sleeping more steadily, waking less often, or feeling more restored during the day. At Renew, we look at sleep as part of the bigger picture. Neurofeedback may be used on its own or combined with approaches such as CBT-I when sleep habits, routines, or sleep-related thinking are also contributing to the problem.
19. Can neurofeedback help with depression?
Depression can affect much more than mood. It may involve low energy, difficulty getting started, disrupted sleep, poor concentration, reduced motivation, feeling emotionally flat, or becoming overwhelmed by everyday demands. Neurofeedback may be considered when regulation, arousal, attention, or sleep are part of that picture. The goal is not to “make someone happy” during a session, but to support brain and nervous system patterns that may make it easier to function, engage, and recover. We look for practical changes such as improved sleep, more consistent energy, better concentration, greater ability to get started with daily activities, or feeling more able to participate in work, relationships, and meaningful routines. Neurofeedback can also be used alongside psychotherapy and medication when those are part of the person’s treatment plan.
20. Can neurofeedback help with migraines and headaches?
Migraines and recurring headaches can affect much more than pain. People may also experience sensitivity to light or sound, fatigue, disrupted sleep, difficulty concentrating, or feeling easily overwhelmed when symptoms are active. Neurofeedback may be used to support the brain and nervous system systems involved in regulation, arousal, sensory processing, and recovery from stress. Depending on the person, the goal might be fewer or less intense headaches, improved tolerance for sensory input, better sleep, or an easier return to everyday activities after a migraine or headache episode. At Renew, we look at headache patterns alongside factors such as sleep, stress, sensory sensitivity, concussion history, and other symptoms when deciding whether neurofeedback may be a useful part of the treatment plan. Neurofeedback does not replace medical assessment, particularly when headaches are new, changing, severe, or unexplained.
21. What is a qEEG, or “brain map”?
A qEEG is a detailed analysis of an EEG recording. Sensors on the scalp record brain activity, and specialized software helps organize and display the information. The results may also be compared with EEG data from other people in the same age group. At Renew, a qEEG is one tool we may use when planning neurofeedback. We look at it alongside your symptoms, history, goals, and daily functioning. The colourful maps are visual displays of EEG information. A qEEG cannot diagnose a condition or tell us exactly what is causing a symptom, but it can provide useful information to help guide treatment planning.
22. What types of neurofeedback does Renew offer?
There is no single type of neurofeedback that is best for everyone. Renew uses several approaches so training can be individualized to the person, their brain activity, and their goals.
These include:
- QEEG-guided neurofeedback, where brain map findings help us identify patterns and select individualized training targets. Training may focus on activity recorded at the scalp or use sLORETA to work with estimated activity in particular brain regions and networks.
- Z-score neurofeedback, which compares selected EEG activity with age-based normative data and provides feedback as those patterns change. Z-score training can also be used with surface EEG or sLORETA approaches.
- ISF neurofeedback, which works with very slow shifts in brain activity and focuses more broadly on arousal and brain-body regulation.
The initial approach is based on your symptoms, history, goals, qEEG findings, and other assessment information. We then continue to adjust the training based on how you respond and what is changing in everyday life.
23. Do I need a qEEG brain map before starting neurofeedback?
In most cases, we recommend completing a qEEG before beginning neurofeedback. A qEEG gives us a strong baseline and a more detailed picture of the brain activity we are working with. Combined with your symptoms, history, and goals, it helps us make more informed decisions about the type of neurofeedback and the protocols we choose. Without that information, we may be making training decisions before we have the fullest picture available. This is why a qEEG is an important part of our assessment and treatment-planning process. The brain map does not determine treatment on its own. It is one piece of the clinical picture, and we continue to adjust training based on how you respond and whether you are seeing meaningful changes in everyday life. A later qEEG may also provide an objective point of comparison with your original baseline when reassessment is useful.
24. How will we know whether neurofeedback is working?
The goal of neurofeedback is not to create a “normal” brain map. The goal is meaningful change in your life.
A qEEG is an important tool for understanding your starting point and helping us select and individualize neurofeedback protocols. But moving every measure closer to the average range is not the objective of treatment.
EEG activity is dynamic. It can look different depending on how well you slept, how tired or alert you are, your stress level, medications, time of day, and even what was happening in your life around the time of the recording. For that reason, a follow-up qEEG is not a simple before-and-after score.
A later qEEG can still provide valuable information. We may see patterns shifting or reorganizing as the brain adapts. Those changes can be informative, particularly when they occur alongside improvements in how you are feeling and functioning. We are not looking for every value to move neatly toward the database average.
Before training begins, we identify the symptoms and everyday goals that matter most to you. Depending on the person, we might look for changes in:
- Sleep
- Attention and concentration
- Emotional or physical regulation
- Recovery after stress
- Headaches, fatigue, or sensory tolerance
- Work, school, relationships, or daily activities
Ultimately, the best measure of progress is whether you are feeling and functioning better in everyday life.
25. What happens if neurofeedback does not seem to be helping?
Neurofeedback is a learning process, and people do not all learn or respond at the same pace. Progress can also be affected by things happening outside the sessions, such as sleep, stress, illness, medication changes, or major life events.
If we are not seeing the changes we hoped for, we do not simply keep repeating the same training. We look at what is happening and consider whether we need to:
- Adjust the neurofeedback protocol
- Try a different neurofeedback approach
- Change the frequency or consistency of training
- Revisit the goals we are tracking
- Look at other factors that may be affecting progress
- Consider whether another treatment or service would be more helpful
It is important to give the brain enough repetition for learning to develop, but completing a certain number of sessions is never the goal by itself.
The goal is meaningful change. If neurofeedback is not helping us move toward that, we reassess the plan.
26. What happens during a typical neurofeedback session?
A session usually starts with a quick check-in about how you have been feeling, including any changes in sleep, stress, symptoms, or medication, as well as how you are progressing toward your training goals. Our neurofeedback team has professional training in therapy and healthcare, so sessions can also include goal setting, problem solving, and support for lifestyle or behavioural changes when appropriate. Small sensors are then placed on the scalp using a conductive paste or gel. During training, you might watch a movie or video, look at images, or listen to sounds while the computer provides feedback based on your EEG activity. The sensors only record brain activity. They do not send electricity into the brain. Throughout the session, the team member monitors the EEG signal and how you are responding. We usually finish with another quick check-in to see how the session felt.
27. How should I prepare for a qEEG or neurofeedback session?
For a qEEG, arrive with clean, dry hair without styling products, oils, sprays, or leave-in conditioner. This helps us get a clear EEG signal.
Unless we have given you different instructions:
- Eat normally and stay hydrated
- Take prescribed medications as usual
- Do not stop or change medication for the appointment unless your prescribing provider tells you to
- Follow any instructions we give you about caffeine
- Let us know about unusual sleep, illness, medication changes, or significant stress
Regular neurofeedback sessions require much less preparation. Come as you normally feel, wear something comfortable, and let us know about any important changes since your last session.
28. How many neurofeedback sessions are usually needed?
There is no single number that works for everyone. Neurofeedback is a learning process, and learning takes repetition. Some people notice changes fairly early, while others need more time before the changes become noticeable or consistent. At Renew, we often plan within a range of about 20 to 40 sessions. This is a general planning range, not a required number or a promise of results. We review progress throughout treatment and look at whether the changes are carrying over into everyday life.
29. How often should I attend neurofeedback sessions?
We usually recommend starting with sessions twice a week. Regular practice gives the brain repeated opportunities to learn and reinforce new patterns. It is similar to learning any other skill. Consistent practice tends to support learning better than practising once in a while. Missing an occasional session does not mean you lose everything you have learned. If twice-weekly appointments are difficult, we can look at a schedule that is more realistic for you.
30. Do the benefits of neurofeedback last?
The goal of neurofeedback is for the learning to carry over beyond the sessions themselves. Like other kinds of learning, new patterns can become more established with repetition and use. But the brain also keeps adapting to life. Major stress, illness, poor sleep, health changes, or long periods without using certain skills can make regulation more difficult again. Think of learning a language. You do not necessarily lose everything if you stop using it, but the skill may become less automatic over time. Some people maintain their improvements without further training. Others may benefit from occasional booster sessions or another period of neurofeedback later on.
31. Can professional neurofeedback be done at home?
Some forms of neurofeedback can be offered through home-based systems when the equipment is set up and monitored by a qualified clinician. That is different from consumer headsets marketed for meditation, focus, or general wellness. These devices vary considerably in what they measure, the quality of the EEG signal, and the type of feedback they provide. At Renew, neurofeedback is currently provided in the clinic. This allows our team to monitor the EEG signal, see how you are responding, and adjust the training when needed.
32. Can neurofeedback be combined with talk therapy or counselling?
Yes. Neurofeedback can be used alongside psychotherapy, counselling, occupational therapy, medication, and other forms of care. Different treatments can work on different parts of the problem. Neurofeedback may help support regulation, while therapy can focus more directly on thoughts, emotions, behaviours, relationships, experiences, and everyday challenges. For some people, feeling more settled or recovering from stress more easily can make it easier to participate in therapy. At Renew, we look at the whole picture and decide how different services might fit together based on the person’s goals.
33. What is neuromeditation, and how is it different from standard neurofeedback?
Neuromeditation combines meditation practice with EEG neurofeedback. During a session, sensors record brain activity while you practise a specific type of meditation. The feedback changes in real time, helping you notice shifts in attention, awareness, or relaxation as they happen. The main difference is that meditation is an active part of the training. In standard neurofeedback, you might simply watch a video or listen to sounds while the computer provides feedback. Like meditation itself, neuromeditation is a skill that develops with practice.
34. What is CBT-I, and can it be combined with neurofeedback?
CBT-I, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia, is a structured treatment that helps the brain and body relearn more consistent sleep. It looks at the habits, routines, and thought patterns that can keep insomnia going. Treatment may include tracking sleep, following a personalized sleep schedule, strengthening the connection between bed and sleep, and reducing the frustration or pressure that can build around sleep. CBT-I and neurofeedback work in different ways. CBT-I focuses on retraining sleep habits and sleep-related thinking, while neurofeedback may be used to support arousal and regulation. At Renew, they can be used separately or together depending on the person’s sleep patterns and treatment goals.
35. What is EMDR therapy, and can it be combined with neurofeedback?
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a psychotherapy commonly used to treat PTSD and other trauma-related concerns. EMDR and neurofeedback work differently. Neurofeedback may help support regulation and recovery from stress, while EMDR focuses more directly on processing distressing memories and reducing their impact in the present. For some people, feeling more regulated can make it easier to participate in trauma therapy. At Renew, the timing and combination of treatments are based on the person’s symptoms, readiness, and goals.
37. Is neurofeedback covered by OHIP?
Neurofeedback services at Renew are not covered by OHIP. Some people may have coverage through extended health benefits or another funding source, depending on their plan and the provider delivering the service.
38. Is neurofeedback covered by extended health insurance?
Sometimes. Coverage varies a lot between insurance plans.
Some plans may cover neurofeedback when it is provided as part of care by an Occupational Therapist, Registered Psychotherapist, or Social Worker. Other plans may not cover neurofeedback at all, or may have specific rules about the provider.
Before starting, it is a good idea to ask your insurance company:
- Is this service covered under my plan?
- Does it need to be provided by a specific type of regulated professional?
- Do I need a referral or preapproval?
- How much coverage do I have each year?
Renew provides receipts that accurately identify the service and the provider. Your insurance company makes the final decision about coverage.
39. Is neurofeedback covered for Veterans and first responders?
It can be. Veterans Affairs Canada recognizes neurofeedback as an adjunct treatment for PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder when the required criteria are met. VAC requires neurofeedback providers to hold certification through the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA). Renew has Board Certified in Neurofeedback clinicians who are able to provide and oversee VAC-approved neurofeedback treatment. Treatment requires approval through VAC, and we can help determine what information is needed before you begin. Coverage may also be available for Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP members through their applicable programs. Other first responders may have coverage through workplace benefits, WSIB, or another insurer.
40. Can I receive mental health or occupational therapy services online?
Yes. Many of Renew’s psychotherapy, counselling, and occupational therapy services are available online across Ontario. Virtual sessions can be used for therapy, education, skill development, sleep support, anxiety treatment, routine building, and other treatment goals. They can also be combined with in-person neurofeedback if you prefer to complete other parts of your care from home. qEEG recordings and neurofeedback are provided in person because they require specialized equipment. We can help you decide whether virtual care, in-person care, or a combination of the two makes the most sense for you.
41. What is Microcurrent Point Stimulation therapy, and how can it support treatment?
Microcurrent Point Stimulation, or MPS, uses a small handheld device to apply very low-level electrical current to selected points on the skin. It may be used to help with pain, muscle tension, or physical discomfort. At Renew, MPS can be considered when pain or tension is making it harder to sleep, settle, concentrate, or participate comfortably in treatment. MPS and neurofeedback serve different purposes. MPS focuses more on physical discomfort, while neurofeedback focuses on brain activity and regulation.
